Mark Kermode introduces... ME!
Over the last six months I've been reviewing movies on a local radio station called Marlow FM. Every Friday I either make an mp3 recording or head down to the studio and talk about all the new releases heading into cinemas. If I make a recording, the hosts of the show play it on air but if I go down to the studio, I actually get to converse with Serena and Lilley who host the two hour Friday evening show 'What's on at the Weekend?'
I even got to co-host the whole two hour show once with Serena when Lilley was away and on September the 20th, I'll be co-hosting with Lilley as Serena is away. It is great experience for me and complements the pretty frequent radio appearances I make on Amazing Radio with Ruth Barnes.
Anyway the real reason for writing about this today is that while I was away gallivanting around Thailand, Serena and Lilley got to go to the Larmer Tree Festival and meet very famous and well respected film critic Mark Kermode. Not only that but they did a 20 minute interview with him and got him to record a (I'm not sure what you call it) sting. So now before I come on and talk about what movies are out at the weekend, Mark Kermode's voice can be heard telling listeners that they are listening to 'What's on at the Weekend?' with Serena and Lilley!
OK so I haven't actually met Kermode and he's not actually introducing me personally but still this is pretty cool right? You never know, one day he might listen in to hear the little sting he made and then stick around to hear my mini-reviews and then perhaps he might just take early retirement and tell me to take over all his duties. It's not impossible surely.

UK Cinema Releases this Weekend: What will you be seeing?
It's finally Friday and the weekend begins before you know it! If you want to hear me talking about the films that open this weekend in cinemas, then tune in to either Amazing Radio soon after midday or Marlow FM very soon after 5pm.
This week there are four releases I'm discussing. The first is the big one for the week; Star Trek Into Darkness. With the beloved Benedict Cumberbatch joining the cast, this one is bound to do even better than its predecessor, JJ Abrams' 2009 reboot. Personally having never been a fan of Star Trek, I'm absolutely loving what Abrams has done with this franchise and looking forward to seeing what he does with the other little science fiction series now.
Mud starring Matthew Mcconaughey as a fugitive hiding out on a Mississippi islet looks less bombastic than Star Trek but equally interesting. Promising a grittier performance from Reese Witherspoon (as Muds' sweetheart) than usual and from Jeff Nichols the director who gave us Take Shelter, this should be a gripping coming of age story as two young boys find and befriend Mcconaughey's fugitive.
Both the other releases for the week are world cinema options and as a result are frustratingly difficult to find in any cinemas near me personally. Our Children is the story of a couple who fall in love, get married, continually pop out kids and then crushing depression takes hold of the wife and it all spirals into absolute despair and tragedy from there. Probably not ideal Friday night, popcorn munching fare but still worth a watch. I reviewed Our Children here.
The next option is only slightly less depressing but a far easier watch than Our Children at least. A Hijacking is the story of a Danish ship that is boarded by Somali pirates and the crew are taken hostage for a long and arduous negotiation process while the pirates demand a ransom. It's got some of the stars of The Killing and Borgen and is fantastic. I reviewed A Hijacking here.

Marlow FM What's on at the Weekend?
You can catch me on the radio at Marlow FM tonight sometime after 5.20 pm if you live in the Marlow area or listen online by going to the Marlow FM website. I have pre-recorded a five minute segment which will be aired right in the middle of rush hour so hopefully all the listeners in their cars on the way home will know about the latest film releases hitting cinemas this weekend.
Chimpanzee is about the life of an orphaned Chimp on the Ivory Coast and narrated by Buzz Lightyear himself!It's from Disney so you can expect lovely cutesy stuff but tainted by a layer of darkness.
This week I'm talking about the following:
21 and Over
When Straight-A college student Jeff
Chang's two best friends take him out for his 21st birthday on the night before
an important medical school interview, what was supposed to be a quick beer
becomes a night of humiliation, over indulgence and utter debauchery. It's full of racial stereotypes, written by the writers of The Hangover and rated 15 by the BBFC. It's occasionally quite funny in a silly, immature
way but also has some moments of sweetness. My full 21 & Over review is here.

All
Stars is about a cheeky
schoolkid who throws a talent contest to save his local youth club. It's got Mark Heap from Big Train and Spaced so must have some funny moments! I'm sure it will entertain younger kids but it looks a bit too squeaky clean for teens.

Starring Colin Farrell and Noomi
Rapace as two strangers who are irresistibly drawn to one another by a
mutual desire for revenge, this is the English language debut from Neils Arden Oplev, the guy who gave us The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

On Amazing Radio and Marlow FM Talking Movies
Tomorrow (26th April) I'll be on digital station Amazing Radio with Ruth Barnes and local radio Marlow FM talking about the big releases of this weekend. You can listen to me discussing Iron Man 3, Bernie, The Look of Love and The Lords of Salem on Amazing Radio from soon after 12pm by going to the Amazing Radio website here. Then soon after 5pm I will be appearing on Marlow FM to talk about the same films and even if you don't live anywhere near Marlow, you can listen to Marlow FM here.
I now have a weekly slot on Marlow FM talking about new releases and have to pre-record about five minutes of just me all by myself talking about films which they then play during rush hour when hopefully lots of people from Marlow are listening and thinking about what they might like to see at the cinema over the weekend.
I'm also on Amazing Radio fairly frequently with about one or two appearances per month. This one does not need pre-recording and I actually get to chat with presenter Ruth Barnes who always knows her stuff about film, helping to keep me on my toes!
I've reviewed three or the four films out this weekend so far and my review of The Look of Love is also coming soon. I hope you might listen to my short radio chats tomorrow if you're near a computer or digital radio!

Box Office of March, Mathieu Kasovitz's Rebellion and Marlow FM slot
My second box office report for Tastic Film has just been published covering the biggest box office hits of the month of March. Check out the box office report here. Family friendly fare unsurprisingly took the lead this month and I'm looking forward to hopefully writing about more horror success stories like the Evil Dead remake in April. It will also be interesting to see how Spring Breakers does with its clear mainstream appeal but also experimental and art house elements.
My review for Mathieu Kassovitz's Rebellion is also up at Filmoria today. I loved the film and am glad to see director Kassovitz back on form. I'm also going to be participating in a roundtable interview with the director on Sunday which is absolutely terrifying but also incredibly exciting. His La Haine is one of my top 3 films of all time so I will have to resist the urge to not just ask him about that and keep questions focused on Rebellion. It probably would not be very professional of me to try and get a photo with him or get him to sign any of my copies of his films but we'll see how it goes! If you have any questions for Mr Kassovitz, then please drop me a comment and I'll try and ask them!
