Looper Joins Marketing Overload Trend

Firstly who is getting annoyed with trailers for trailers?  Weirdly I'm not.  When it comes to movies I really can't get enough of the marketing.  So as long as they don't show all the best jokes, tell the whole story or ruin the ending, they can advertise as much as they damn well like.

Which is exactly what Prometheus, Total Recall and now Looper are doing.  Trailer previews or trailers for trailers are becoming the next big thing.  Just another way to get us movie fans slobbering.  I particularly enjoyed the way the Total Recall one puts up epic titles saying... 'Get Ready'.... more flashes of images.... 'For the Premiere'... more epic imagery.... 'of the trailer' (sounds of audience groaning).  Oh is that it?

So anyway whether you like them or not, here's the trailer preview for Rian Johnson's Looper which I'm intensely excited about.  It was one of my most anticipated for 2012 and just one of the many new films featuring the talents of the mighty Bruce Willis and the incredibly likeable Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Here's some more images from the film if you haven't seen them.  It seems they're trying to 'Brucify' Gordon-Levitt somehow.  I can't quite put my finger on it (maybe they've done something to his mouth?) but seeing as they seem to be playing the same character in this time travel science fiction actioner, it makes the film look even more interesting.  I read somewhere JGL has even been studying Willis's voice in Sin City so I'm very keen to see one of my favourite up-and-comers tackling an impersonation of the legend that was/is John McClane.  And every picture has guns in it.  And guns in movies are cool.

1 Gun
Finger gun

2 Guns
Willis don't need a gun
JGL does

It's got time travel, Bruce Willis and JGL and it's directed by the guy that gave us Brick.  I'm hoping it lives up to that last statement.  What do you think?  More or less excited about this now?

  1. Your captions have amused me!

I think studios get nervous easily these days. Maybe their marketing teams think trailers of trailers are the way to ease the masses into whatever they're selling?

Either way Looper's one of my most anticipated films this year! I only got on the Brick bandwagon a couple of years back. Also, Rian's episode of Breaking Bad was one of my favourites! Add this with JGL and Willis? This one can't fail me!

    1. haha thanks Jaina! Yeah I'm afraid I totally don't mind it. I love the anticipation so this just adds to it!

Didn't know Rian did an episode of BB so will watch out for that one! Thanks for letting me know!

  2. The trailer for trailer thing usually annoys me unless I'm completely psyched for the movie. I actually looked at frame-by-frame analysis for Prometheus promos for trailer. It's a sickness :)

  3. Yeah you gotta forgive some of these movies. Prometheus can do no wrong and I don't blame you for looking at the frame by frame analysis. I think we're all absolutely more than ready to see what Sir Ridley has in store for us. I hope Looper will be as good as I hope.

  4. Yea I haven't watched or posted these teasers to the teaser trailer. I'm really looking forward to the movie, not the teaser trailer. That's just ridiculous at this point.

    1. But... but... you have to look forward to the teaser trailer now! They made a little film to tell you to.

  5. The story for "Looper" does sound interesting. As for trailers, I've lost count how many trailers "The Avengers" have had... preview, full trailer, Superbowl trailer, what 3 or 4 TV spots, Japanese trailer... I keep telling myself to avoid most of them, but end up watch every single one. Thank God the movie is finally coming out in 2 weeks!

    1. haha yeah not long now. I wonder how much of the movie you could piece together from all the advance stuff. Might have to try that one day!

  6. so, I am avoiding seeing any of these trailers for trailers lately. especially for this one. I look forward to seeing what the trailer will hold! Thursday can't come soon enough!

  7. I am being pretty good this year. Avoiding behind the scenes 'leaks' and trailers for trailers. It is a bit sill in my opinion. I long for the days when we only got to see a trailer at the cinema and would go into a film pretty much blind.

    1. I hear you Scott but I'm afraid those days are long gone and it's only going to get worse. I'm waiting for the first preview for the preview of the teaser.

  8. This is a really interesting topic for an essay, and you backed up your case well, but man, I cannot stand these trailer for trailers. I'm not being sarcastic here, but can't you just picture the tease for the tease for the teaser? Too much, man, too much.

    1. I know it could get hilarious! I'm actually curious to see how far the studios can take it.

  9. While I like some of the viral marketing for films, the trailer before the trailer seems to me to be the equivalent of the shirt before the shirt on Jersey Shore. ;-)

    1. I'll have to look into that! I've heard of Jersey Shore but I've got no idea about this shirt before a shirt.

    2. Pete, Those fine gentlemen like to put on an Italian tuxedo shirt, prior to selecting the subtle Affliction or Ed Hardy shirt, they will be wearing for the evening. In a moment of brilliance they dubbed the ritual "the shirt before the shirt"

  10. I talked about this a couple of weeks ago. I personally dislike this 'teaser for a trailer' trend but at least Looper is doing it slightly different in that they have the filmmaker and actor actually talking about it, instead of throwing out snippets like a trailer would w/ the words 'get ready' like Total Recall did.

  11. Yeah Prometheus had Sir Ridley talking too but mainly it was just images. Perhaps that's the way forward if the studios insist on previewing their trailers.

  12. I am super excited about Looper (Brick is amazing!) and I LOVE JGL! And although I really enjoy trailers, I agree, that sometimes it reveals too much so I tend to stay away from the ones for movies I really want to see...just to be safe. Like for Cabin in the Woods--I did not watch anything--and so happy I didn't! So, needless to say I love when they tease instead of tell--trailer editing is indeed an art form and we have a bunch of hacks out there! :D

    1. Yeah that's very true. A great trailer doesn't really need to spoil a damn thing but too many do. It's nice to see Rian Johnson and JGL speaking in this teaser for the teaser.
