Starburst Magazine Issue 403: Turtles, Transformers and another short story!

In the latest issue of Starburst Magazine, there are three of my pieces of writing in it.

Firstly, there is the preview of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, then there is my review of Transformers: Age of Extinction (which you can also find on the website here) and finally there is a horrible little short story that I wrote called The Nurse and the Butcher.

I hope you will consider picking up a copy either online or in your local newsagent!

Short Story published in Starburst Magazine: The Day Job

Starburst Magazine continue to publish my short stories along with the wonderful art work by Rylan Cavell. The latest is the first of my short stories to go in the print edition of the magazine as opposed to online and is titled The Day Job. It is based loosely on the character of Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films and is a story about a warped individual who thinks it is ok to kill and cook people for a little bit of pleasure and also consumption.

It was written while I was doing a short story course and was set the task of writing a story that began with the sentence 'It is hard to saw through a human head with a hacksaw' so you get the gist of the direction it takes.

Starburst is on sale in shops all around the UK and elsewhere and is the longest running magazine of Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy. I found 6 copies on the shelves in WHSmiths today and took a photo to post on Facebook and this blog in order to spread the word. Please go pick up a copy of issue 394 in shops now. There's loads on Doctor Who in the issue and reviews, news and features along with my little short story. Or even better, subscribe here. Even better still, if you fancy getting a short story published in the magazine or on the website, then have a look here at their recruitment page.

I have written a few more stories which I'm hoping to get included either on the website or in print in the future. One of them is extremely sick and I'm desperate to see if it gets published or screwed up and thrown in the bin instead! If you pick up issue 394 of Starburst Magazine, then please have a read of my story and let me know what you think!

Short Story Published at Starburst Magazine: Living for the Weekend

A while back I had my first piece of fiction published by Starburst Magazine, a nasty little story called Woman on the Wind and now I have just had my second short story published, a slightly less nasty Living for the Weekend.

This is the story of a guy who learns to time travel just through some gift he has and being able to use the power of his mind to wish those dull and boring hours away. He is a bit of a selfish asshole; hooked on drugs, bored with life and permanently wishing it was the weekend.

I wrote it all in one sitting in a couple of hours and I think the pace of the story reflects my desire to get it written quickly. I wanted it to start at a bit of a breathless pace to reflect the youth and energy of the character but then I wanted it to quicken even more to show just how fast time flies if you are wishing everyday away. I hope this comes across and that also if you start to read it, you will find you have to finish it! It only takes a few minutes to read so what are you waiting for? Go read Living for the Weekend!

I saw it as a cross between the British film Human Traffic which is all about people getting off their faces on ecstasy and coke at the weekends and The Time Traveller's Wife which is a romantic and tragic book that I absolutely loved every second of reading. My wife then read Living for the Weekend and said it reminded her of Click, the Adam Sandler film. Either way I'm happy. It might not be original but I'm happy with the way it came out. It could be better I'm sure but I'm just very pleased to have it published. I hope one day somebody will read it and demand to turn it into a short film. I'd love to see that!

Let me know what you think if you read it! Here's that link one more time: Living for the Weekend

Short Story Published at Starburst Magazine

I've just had my first ever piece of original horror fiction published over at Starburst Magazine, a wonderful site full of horror, science fiction and fantasy news, reviews and features. I was doing a short story course recently and had to read this out to a class full of nice old pensioners. I edited one of the last paragraphs as I didn't want to disgust them.

It's a pretty disturbing little story about a guy and a girl, but as it came from my head; the guy is a deranged, depressed and has done something very terrible to this girl who he supposedly loves so much.

The story is called Woman on the Wind and you can read it just by clicking the link. What I found interesting is that when I read the short story to the small class of lovely elderly people, they said they felt quite sorry for the guy in it, despite what he did. Maybe I shouldn't have edited it for them and then they would have a better idea of the full horror of the story.

Whether you read it or not, please just go and check out the artwork that Starburst have done for the story. I'm just completely in love with the picture they have created for Woman on the Wind. And if you do read the story and you are aware that my wife is a red head then please do not fear for her safety. The story is not autobiographical and I do not have any intention of harming her... ever! I just like writing about red haired women because they create striking imagery in my head and hopefully the readers too!

Anyway I hope you like the story and if you do read it (should only take a minute or two) then please let me know what you think! Starburst are going to publish another of my short stories called The Day Job in the print version of the magazine and I'm hoping this might be the first step to becoming a hugely successful author! Maybe.
