Short Story Published at Starburst Magazine: Living for the Weekend

A while back I had my first piece of fiction published by Starburst Magazine, a nasty little story called Woman on the Wind and now I have just had my second short story published, a slightly less nasty Living for the Weekend.

This is the story of a guy who learns to time travel just through some gift he has and being able to use the power of his mind to wish those dull and boring hours away. He is a bit of a selfish asshole; hooked on drugs, bored with life and permanently wishing it was the weekend.

I wrote it all in one sitting in a couple of hours and I think the pace of the story reflects my desire to get it written quickly. I wanted it to start at a bit of a breathless pace to reflect the youth and energy of the character but then I wanted it to quicken even more to show just how fast time flies if you are wishing everyday away. I saw it as a cross between the British film Human Traffic which is all about people getting off their faces on ecstasy and coke at the weekends and The Time Traveller's Wife which is a romantic and tragic book that I absolutely loved every second of reading. My wife then read Living for the Weekend and said it reminded her of Click, the Adam Sandler film. Either way I'm happy. It might not be original but I'm happy with the way it came out. It could be better I'm sure but I'm just very pleased to have it published. I hope one day somebody will read it and demand to turn it into a short film. I'd love to see that!

Movie watching and writing in April 2013

I watched 16 films this month but write the most amount of posts I've ever written in one month. It was also the second biggest month for page views in the history of I Love That Film with over 16,500 views in April. Anyway that's enough statistical excitement and here's what I watched this last month along with a rating I've just decided on right now. I also got to meet and interview one of my favourite filmmakers Mathieu Kassovitz for Filmoria.

I wrote a couple of box office reports for Tastic Film: Week of Magical Action and The Scare Off.

I also had my first articles for Yahoo Movies published about the Fast and Furious 7 director shortlist, James Wan getting the job and why I'd like to see Zack Snyder direct Justice League. I also wrote pieces for Yahoo on cheating in sports, marathon training, the death of Thatcher and cold caller chuminess.

This month I've also just started writing for Starburst Magazine and they have published a horrible little short story I wrote called Woman on the Wind and some news stories on Byzantium poster and trailer, Star Trek Into Darkness character posters and Michael Bay on Ninja Turtles and Transformers 4. I also reviewed the book The Art of Epic. Hopefully another of my short stories is going in the print edition of the magazine soon!

It's been a hectic but very exciting month! A couple of my college students have also started to write about and review films on their own blogs so I'm really happy to be helping them and hopefully inspiring them a bit too.

I've watched 66 new to me films this year so far and Beasts of the Southern Wild is certainly one of the absolute best. I cannot believe they gave the Oscar to Jennifer Lawrence over Quvenzhané Wallis. She was incredible. No offense to JLaw who I also like very much.

I'm now going to have to re-think my best of 2012 list after seeing both Beasts of the Southern Wild and Side by Side which would both make my top 10.

Short Story Published at Starburst Magazine

I've just had my first ever piece of original horror fiction published over at Starburst Magazine, a wonderful site full of horror, science fiction and fantasy news, reviews and features. I was doing a short story course recently and had to read this out to a class full of nice old pensioners. I edited one of the last paragraphs as I didn't want to disgust them.

It's a pretty disturbing little story about a guy and a girl, but as it came from my head; the guy is a deranged, depressed and has done something very terrible to this girl who he supposedly loves so much.

The story is called Woman on the Wind and you can read it just by clicking the link. What I found interesting is that when I read the short story to the small class of lovely elderly people, they said they felt quite sorry for the guy in it, despite what he did. Maybe I shouldn't have edited it for them and then they would have a better idea of the full horror of the story.

Whether you read it or not, please just go and check out the artwork that Starburst have done for the story. I'm just completely in love with the picture they have created for Woman on the Wind. And if you do read the story and you are aware that my wife is a red head then please do not fear for her safety. The story is not autobiographical and I do not have any intention of harming her... ever! I just like writing about red haired women because they create striking imagery in my head and hopefully the readers too!

Starburst are going to publish another of my short stories called The Day Job in the print version of the magazine and I'm hoping this might be the first step to becoming a hugely successful author!
