Short Story published in Starburst Magazine: The Day Job

Starburst Magazine continue to publish my short stories along with the wonderful art work by Rylan Cavell. The latest is the first of my short stories to go in the print edition of the magazine as opposed to online and is titled The Day Job. It is based loosely on the character of Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films and is a story about a warped individual who thinks it is ok to kill and cook people for a little bit of pleasure and also consumption.

It was written while I was doing a short story course and was set the task of writing a story that began with the sentence 'It is hard to saw through a human head with a hacksaw' so you get the gist of the direction it takes.

Starburst is on sale in shops all around the UK and elsewhere and is the longest running magazine of Sci-Fi, Horror and Fantasy. I found 6 copies on the shelves in WHSmiths today and took a photo to post on Facebook and this blog in order to spread the word. Please go pick up a copy of issue 394 in shops now. There's loads on Doctor Who in the issue and reviews, news and features along with my little short story. Or even better, subscribe here. Even better still, if you fancy getting a short story published in the magazine or on the website, then have a look here at their recruitment page.

I have written a few more stories which I'm hoping to get included either on the website or in print in the future. One of them is extremely sick and I'm desperate to see if it gets published or screwed up and thrown in the bin instead! If you pick up issue 394 of Starburst Magazine, then please have a read of my story and let me know what you think!

The Walking Dead and Homeland Return

The fourth season of The Walking Dead has reanimated and stumbled towards screens across the world, attracting record numbers of gore hounds. Homeland season 3 also made a return recently to slightly less fanfare with a Damian Lewis-less first two episodes before Brody came back in time for the third episode.

I've been writing all about both shows over at Yahoo. My writing over there has been keeping me pretty busy lately and this blog is suffering as a result. However my page views over at Yahoo have already over taken the page views at this blog and I haven't even been writing there for a year yet whereas this blog has been plodding along for over 2 and half years now.

This probably isn't the post for this but I can feel this blog slipping away from me at the moment. Writing at I Love That Film has genuinely changed my life. What started small became an obsession and then I used this blog to get writing opportunities at other websites. Now I'm not sure if I can keep it all up anymore. I barely write anything here at the blog or for Filmoria (who first took me on and gave me massive opportunities) and I'm getting behind on my PhD thesis. Anyway this is not the end yet but I just felt like writing that before offering a glimpse of my recent Walking Dead and Homeland writing at Yahoo:

Recent writing for Yahoo on Fast and Furious 7 and The Walking Dead

Please feel free to subscribe to my Yahoo contributor page to never miss a story. Below are some of my recent articles. Please click the headings to see the full story!

Ender's Game Q and A with Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield, Hailee SteinFeld and Gavin Hood

Ahead of the release of Gavin Hood's sci-fi epic Ender's Game, the stars were in London's Leicester Square for a Q&A event and to share some clips from the film with a huge crowd of expectant fans. After screening the trailer and two clips from the film released on October 25th, the stars took to the stage to answer questions from fans.

It got off to a rocky start with some unexpected delays but finally producers Bob Orci, Gigi Pritzker, stars Sir Ben Kingsley, Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld and director Gavin Hood took their seats to much applause. Harrison Ford appeared to be in a good mood, if a little slow sadly these days as he speaks and thinks. Sir Ben spoke at length about his character while Asa Butterfield also had plenty to say on his experience of making the film. While Steinfeld was quiet, she was charming whenever she spoke. Director Gavin Hood and the producers all demonstrated their passion for the film and the book it was based on.

Nothing was mentioned on the whole Orson Scott Card homophobic controversy unfortunately as I would have been interested to see what would have been said on it. I completely understand people wanting to boycott this movie if you feel strongly about what Card has said in the past but on  the other hand, whether the guy is homophobic or not makes no difference to his talent as a writer. It's difficult as I don't want to make the guy even richer or give his views any more publicity but I think the film looks interesting and I hope it has some important points to make about war.

The book is nearly 30 years old and seems to have been very prescient. Gavin Hood gave us Tsotsi and adapted Card's much loved book for the screen. Producer Gigi Pritzker has been trying to get the film made since buying the rights 13 years ago so it's been a pretty epic struggle to get it made. Along with Butterfield, Steinfeld and the big guns Sir Ben and Mr Ford, the film also stars Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin and The Help's Viola Davis.

It could be Starship Troopers without the satire or it could be a serious Independence Day with added moral ambiguity and complex themes about the ethics of war. Either way it was an interesting Q&A and I hope you will check out my videos from the event below and at the bottom is the trailer:

New Godzilla Trailer features no Matthew Broderick

Unless Matthew Broderick is the man in the Godzilla suit, I don't think he's going to be in Gareth Edwards' latest incarnation of the radioactive giant monster movie and this is already a good sign. The first teaser trailer has finally made it onto the net for Godzilla (2014) and it already looks plenty epic. No offence to Mr Broderick who I'm sure is charming and has been in some fine films but he was just one (very small) part of the many things that were wrong with Roland Emmerich's abomination.

Gareth Edwards who previously directed low budget (but in my opinion slightly overrated) wonder Monsters has been showering himself in a reported $160 million budget and looks to be spending it wisely. Securing an excellent cast that includes Aaron Taylor Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Bryan Cranston and Sally Hawkins, the teaser shows absolutely none of them. Instead we get very few humans at all and only the shortest glimpse of the real star, although it is clear the makers have not resulted to a man in a monster costume to bring Godzilla back to life.

What we do get is a foreboding soundtrack, portentous voice over and lots of shots of the aftermath of the beast's rampage. Smoke fills the sky, buildings are torn to pieces and then we get our first glimpse of 'the destroyer of worlds' as he emerges out of the destruction. It's a moody first trailer promising a much more serious take on Godzilla than Matthew Broderick running around Madison Square Gardens being chased by monster spawn.

With Legendary Pictures behind the film, could it be too much for ask for a Pacific Rim/Godzilla crossover for the future? check out the trailer and see what you think. Expect future trailers to start giving more of an idea about the human characters in the film and the strong themes of family that all the stars have been promising.

Box Office Report on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 and more

Continuing my role as box office reporter for Film and TV news and reviews website Tastic film, I have written a brief overview of what has been big at the American box office and beyond over the last week. Here is a sneak peek but please head over to Tastic Film for the full report!

Animated family sequel Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 has proved a very tasty treat for audiences over the weekend, opening to a respectable $35 million. Playing in over 4000 cinemas, it has gained a bigger audience than its predecessor but has fallen supremely short of this year’s other big animated sequel, Despicable Me 2 which currently still sits as the second biggest film of the year. However, expect Cloudy to devour ticket sales over the next couple of weeks.

Cloudy’s nearest competitor is the far more adult thriller Prisoners which has been at number one all week since opening last weekend. The tale of child kidnapping has not put off audiences with its shocking violence and buoyed by excellent reviews and the star power of Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, has managed to make $45 million worldwide so far with the international box office bound to pick up this week, even if domestic takings dropped significantly after the opening weekend.

Insidious Chapter 2 which had a huge opening weekend earlier in September has slipped further down to number 6 in the weekend box office charts but has already taken over $78 million in three weeks of release off the back of a paltry $5 million budget...

Head over to Tastic Film for the rest of the box office report.

New Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Posters, Banners and Trailer

Christmas is definitely coming early with the biggest of blockbusters being displayed like bright lights on the particularly large house that is the internet. The studios behind The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be keen to capitalise on the successes of the first in each film series and long ago started the marketing ball rolling with stills, posters and trailers. Expect the marketing machines to go into over drive as we get closer to the November and December release dates.

For now, some lovely new banners have been released for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and also a brand spanking new poster for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The Desolation of Smaug banners are all the usually sumptuous range of imagery and really reminded me of the marketing of The Lord of the Rings and the weight of expectation that each new poster or trailer for that trilogy carried every Christmas.

The first banner focuses on Bilbo and the team of dwarves battling their way through what is likely the darkness of Mirkwood. Then there are separate banners for Elf-King and Legolas Dad Thranduil and finally Luke Evan's new addition Bard the Bowman. There are no more signs of Smaug but Peter Jackson is undoubtedly saving the big final reveal of the dragon until December 13 when the film is released. Enjoy the banners below:

If that hasn't tickled your fancy, perhaps a further slice of Katniss might do the job. Ahead of the November 22nd release date, Lionsgate have unleashed another fiery image from the Hunger Games sequel. Katniss is still determined to maintain her archery skills but despite being thrown back into an arena to fight for her life against former winners, is also being encouraged to 'remember who the enemy is'. The real enemy of course is President Snow and the system that imprisons Katniss and her fellow captive tributes but we will have to wait until Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2 to see Jennifer Lawrence and co rage against the real machine. For now, enjoy the poster:

Liking the look of these posters and banners? If none of that whets your appetite, why not try the brand new Desolation of Smaug trailer:

Sunshine on Leith Review

Some films are impossible to not smile at. Even if you hate musicals, happy endings, romantic comedy or kitchen sink drama, Sunshine on Leith is destined to thaw the coldest of hearts. Even if you hate The Proclaimers who provide the songs stuffed into this Scottish musical of romance and heart break.

If you would walk 500 miles just to avoid this kind of saccharine stuff, just pause for a moment and read on. Sunshine on Leith has two returning soldiers Ally (Kevin Guthrie) and Davy (George MacKay) arrive back in impossibly sunny Edinburgh and attempt to get their lives back on track after tours in Afghanistan. Ally loves Davy's sister Liz (Freya Mavor) and wants to propose while Davy is set up with Liz's mate Yvonne (Antonia Thomas) and the pair quickly fall in love. Added to the story of these young lovers is Davy's parents Rab and Jean who are also finding love comes with its ups and downs.

It all starts off so happy, sunny and cheery that you may find yourself wondering where the conflict is going to come from. Everyone seems happy and songs are sung with all the gusto of people living in blissful denial of the troubles that surround them. Unemployment and PTSD may be hinted at (very mildly) but mostly the ex-soldiers skip along the pavements to Proclaimers songs before winning hearts and all seems settled and stress free.

Soon however the inevitable cracks emerge. Liz wants to see the world, Yvonne wants to see her family back in England and a secret from the past threatens to tear apart Rab and Jean after 25 years of marriage. Though the young stars might fill much of the running time, it is the pairing of Peter Mullan and Jane Horrocks as the mature couple and the very difficult situation that they are forced to confront that gives Sunshine on Leith its real dramatic intensity.

However Sunshine on Leith is not a depressing affair. It is sweet and sincere and the cast give it their all in singing, dancing and emoting. Dexter Fletcher follows his directorial debut Wild Bill with a very different film though still finds time to squeeze old pal Jason Flemyng in for a stand out scene and elicits great performances from all of his cast. The photography is also frequently stunning with Fletcher including aerial shots and gorgeous sunsets that will keep the Scottish Tourist Board happy.

Like a sugary drink, Sunshine on Leith is impossible to dislike but might leave cynics with a feeling of slight sickness. In terms of musicals it is far superior to Mamma Mia and therefore deserves to find as big an audience. It would make a great pick me up after the rather more grueling and distinctly less sunny view of Scotland presented in Filth, also out on October 4th. Consider them a yin yang double bill.

If nothing else Sunshine on Leith should have you singing along to many of the tunes and confirms Dexter Fletcher as a diverse director to watch. It is a sunny delight!
